PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
With summer upon us, our civic is well on it’s way to accomplishing this years goals. One
that has been hanging around for the past two years was the refurbishing of the Bus Shelters.
Thanks to the efforts of Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Deputy Commissioner of Housing
and Community Development Roberta Owens, the Bus Shelter on Rte. 112, in front of
Brookwood Townhouses was replaced. Another shelter on Rte. 112 was cleaned up and
they are working on the one next to Home Depot. This is a good example of what can be
accomplished when the Town and civics work together.
For the past year, we’ve been trying to start up a Beautification Committee in order to
formulate a plan for projects around Coram. Last month, one of our members stepped
forward to help.
Deborah Mantell was appointed to head up the Beautification Committee. Jumping in
with both feet, she’s done some amazing things in a short period of time. She organized
several cleanups and arranged to obtain planters from the Town so that we can plant
flowers around Coram. Not satisfied with cleaning up and planting, she came up with the
idea of getting the kids in Coram involved with cleanup and the importance of keeping our
hamlet clean by starting them out at a young age. She created a contest “Keep Coram
Beautiful Because.....” Kids that enter will draw a picture and write a description why they
should “Keep Coram Beautiful”. The first place winner will receive a trophy and a prize.
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to three age groups, 6 and under, 7-12
and 13-18. Those participating will receive a certificate from Councilwoman Jane Bonner
at our July meeting. The deadline for entries is June 30th. To participate, call Deborah
Mantell 473-4534.
On some positive notes, our participation in the “Great Brookhaven Cleanup” was a great
success. Mt. Sinai/Coram Rd. looks a lot better. We hope to put together another cleanup
soon.
The Pavilion at Diamond in the Pines Park has been completed in time for the enjoyment of
the summer season. We can picnic, play or just get out of the rain when visiting the park.
Another surprise, the tennis courts planned for the future are already being installed.
At one of our recent meetings, we got a big surprise, two members of the former Greater
Coram Civic Association attended our meeting in order to turn over the remainder of their
treasury to our civic. We thank them and will put the money to good use.
Avalon Bay recently had their ground breaking ceremony. They are looking forward to being
good neighbors on Middle Country Rd.
It looks as though the Old Hess Station on Middle Country Rd. will be a new home for a
CVS. Arrangements are in the works.
Our recent meeting with the UA Property owner hopefully yielded the resurrection of the
movie theater with stadium seating, total renovation inside and out, landscaping and resurface
of the parking lots with a possible restaurant(s). We’ll be keeping on top of this
latest solution for the property.
I think we’re well on our way to a renaissance on Middle Country Rd. and throughout Coram.
We are closer to the dream of having a viable main street and a sense of place.Working with
developers and the Town, we can succeed in making Coram the place we’ve
always wanted it to be.
Wishing you all a great summer.
